Acadia National Park
Salt air, granite, and a quieter kind of wonder.
Use Mount Desert Island for your core stay, then decide whether Schoodic's separate mainland drive merits an outing of its own.

What makes Acadia different
Acadia asks you to think in both shorelines and distances. Mount Desert Island holds much of the familiar scenery, while the quieter mainland Schoodic Peninsula is a separate drive. Good planning helps you enjoy both without mistaking one for a quick detour from the other.
How we can help plan your visit
- Choose a Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, or other island-area base that fits the Park Loop Road days and the dining rhythm you prefer.
- Arrange the timing of shoreline stops, carriage-road time, and an optional Cadillac Summit Road drive around seasonal transport and vehicle-reservation rules.
- If Schoodic belongs in the trip, give the mainland its own half or full day and coordinate agreed lodging or activities rather than tacking it onto a crowded island loop.
Experiences to consider
- Sea-and-granite morning: a Park Loop Road segment with short shoreline time instead of racing to every pullout.
- Quieter walking: a carriage-road or easy lakeside choice selected for mobility, season, and parking or shuttle access.
- A different coast: Schoodic Point and the mainland loop, allowing for its separate drive and current services.
Illustrative trip concept: An island stay with another coast to discover
Suggested duration: 3–4 days. A Mount Desert Island base for Park Loop Road and carriage roads, with a separately timed Schoodic visit if desired.
- Phase 1: Settle in, then explore a portion of Park Loop Road and the eastern shoreline at a comfortable pace.
- Phase 2: Pair a carriage-road or Jordan Pond-area outing with village time; make Cadillac an option only if the road is open and the right vehicle reservation is secured.
- Phase 3: Give Schoodic Peninsula its own outing, or keep a flexible day for weather, another shoreline, and unhurried meals on the island.

Practical planning considerations
- A park entrance pass is separate from a seasonal Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation; check NPS rules for your exact travel dates.
- Schoodic is on the mainland, roughly an hour by road from the Hulls Cove area—not an adjacent stop on Mount Desert Island's loop.
- Parking, Island Explorer schedules, road openings, and coastal conditions vary by season; plan alternatives rather than promising a particular sunrise or access.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a reservation to drive to Cadillac Mountain?
A separate vehicle reservation is required for Cadillac Summit Road during the dates designated by NPS; a park entrance pass is also required. Other park areas do not use that Cadillac vehicle reservation, so we can plan a worthwhile day even without a summit drive.
Is Schoodic Peninsula a quick stop from Bar Harbor?
No. Schoodic is the park's mainland area and about an hour's drive from the Hulls Cove area on Mount Desert Island. It deserves its own outing rather than an afterthought at the end of Park Loop Road.
Can I enjoy Acadia without a strenuous hike?
Yes. Shoreline viewpoints, suitable carriage-road or lakeside options, villages, and a carefully chosen scenic drive can make a rewarding visit. We match the route to your walking comfort and current access.
